A visualization of the depth and route of Tokyo's 13 subway lines, based on vertical profile drawings from construction records (construction histories), and other sources. Opaque segments are above ground; semi-transparent are underground. The ground surface line can also be displayed, revealing how each line relates to the topography of plateaus, lowlands, and valleys.
Elevation & Cross-Section
Elevations are based on vertical profile drawings from construction records, referenced to TP (Tokyo Peil) mean sea level. The vertical relationship with the ground surface shows how each line relates to the topography of plateaus, lowlands, and valleys.
Station "depth" and "height" are based on official data. Tokyo Metro: depth from ground surface to rail level (source: Tokyo Metro Handbook 2017). Toei Subway: depth from ground surface to platform level (source: Toei Subway Overview 2007). The two standards differ by approximately 1.1 m (the height from rail to platform surface). A/B entries indicate Platform A / Platform B.
The vertical axis is exaggerated approximately 10× for clarity.
Data Accuracy
Marunouchi, Hibiya, Tozai, Chiyoda, Yurakucho, Hanzomon, Fukutoshin, Asakusa Lines: Created by reading gradient symbols (‰) from construction history vertical profile drawings. The cross-section view shows gradient, horizontal distance, and elevation change for each segment.
Oedo Line: Approximate, based on figures in the source literature. Per-segment gradient values are not shown, but the cross-section shape is relatively accurate (stations marked with *approx.).
Ginza, Namboku, Mita, Shinjuku Lines: Estimated from other sources. Elevations and cross-section shapes are approximate, and some sections simply connect stations with straight lines (stations marked with *approx.).
